BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The School of Languages as an integral part of the institution, Federal College of Education (F.C.E.) Pankshin, came into existence in 1989. The School then had English and French Departments. Later other Departments Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba (Nigerian Languages) were introduced. Latest to be introduced was the Department of Arabic Language.
Since the inception of the School of Languages it has been growing in the population of both Staff and Students, for example, during the session 2003/2004 there were about one thousand three hundred and thirty three (1,333) students and thirty (30) Academic Staff as well as nine (9) non-teaching staff.
Currently as at 2009/2010 session, the students population stands at about two thousand eight hundred at NCE level (2,800) with sixty one Academic staff (61) and over twenty (20) Non-teaching staff.
The School runs the Bachelor of Education degree currently in three departments of English, French and Arabic. Plans are underway to run a Bachelor of Education, degree in Linguistics and Nigerian Languages. Currently the Bachelor of Education students’ number stands at three hundred and thirty (330).
In 1994 the School of Languages acquired a Language Laboratory serving all the six (6) Departments.
As at now another utra-modern language laboratory is constructed and functional with capacity for a far larger number of students.
All Departments have full accreditation status. Plans are on the way to introduce more Nigerian languages.
As stated above the School of Languages has the following Departments:
- Arabic Department
- English Department
- French Department
- Hausa Department
- Igbo Department
- Yoruba Department
VALUE:
Providing prompt, efficient and quality teaching and learning in Languages.
VISION:
To produce qualitative and competent teachers in the various languages taught in the school.
MISSION:
To offer effective, efficient and qualitative teaching and learning services.
PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING/LEARNING LANGUAGES
The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) Minimum Standards for Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) stipulates that:
“Nigerian Modern man can hardly contemplate communal life without the instrument of Languages”. It goes on to state that: “Performance, especially spoken language, defines personality”. Thus for the objectives for teaching Arabic and of course French and other languages being studied in the School of Languages, the aims are to:
- Help student teachers acquire spoken and written competence in both the foreign and National Languages (Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba).
- Acquaint student teachers with the socio-political and cultural lives of the speakers of the Language, with a view to promoting local and international understanding.
- Prepare the student-teachers for the task of teaching the languages at the primary and Junior Secondary School Levels.
- To enable students use Arabic, French, English, Igbo, Hausa or Yoruba as a medium of instruction.
OBJECTIVES
- To produce qualitative and effective language teachers for the primary and Junior Secondary School levels.
- To achieve communicative competence in the languages taught in the school.
- To promote local and international interaction through exposure to the socio-political and cultural lives of the native speakers of the languages.
- To prepare student teachers for further research and studies in the languages and literature.
